Grapefruit Martini cheers to refreshing and sippable

Grapefruit Martini is a refreshing summer drink. It brings nutrish and delish to Cheers!

Are you a one-cocktail kind of person? No matter where or when, you order “the usual.”

Or are you more like me, a seasonal sipper?

My go-to winter drink is an Old Fashioned muddled with orange and maraschino cherries with Knob Creek or Maker’s Mark bourbon. Or a SideCar made with a VSOP brandy, Cointreau and lemon juice.

But those drinks are so last month.

Summer brings a grapefruit martini. Well, maybe a gin tonic. Especially after a round of golf. Here’s my preferred GT.

Happy Hour Benefits

A Grapefruit Martini is soul food for me. The sweet-tart citrus zing of freshly squeezed juices makes my tastebuds sing. That alone fuels my happy factor. Even more, the vitamin C, potassium, magnesium and beta-carotene make the benefits of this cocktail last beyond happy hour.

Best way to squeeze fruit

So grab your fruit and get to squeezing. Currently, for limes and lemons, I’m using this hand-held juicer is by OXO, but I think the bowl is a little small, so I want to try this Bellemain. I can make it work for grapefruit if I quarter them, but if I’m squeezing several, I use the juicer attachment on my Kitchen Aid mixer. Then I freeze the juice for later. That makes easy cocktail sippin’!

Cook’s tip:  When buying fruit, choose those that feel heavier than the others. That means more juice for your drinks.

How to make a Grapefruit Martini

Put your martini glass in the freezer to chill.

Fill martini shaker with liquid ingredients. Then add ice so shaker is half filled with cubes.

  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 4 ounce freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
  • 1 ounce Cointreau (a high-end orange liqueur), you could sub Grand Marnier or Triple Sec
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
The art of the martini shake

The cocktail shaker is an important component of a martini. Ice, and the resulting melt of it, contribute to the drink. The purpose of ice is more than to chill, it’s dilution smooths the flavor. I’ve tried several cocktail shakers and I keep reaching for this stainless steel with a cap. It is less likely to leak and drip than some and it’s dishwasher safe.

Pin it for later!

Time to relax. Grab your friend, watch the summer sunset and chill.

Or chill with sangria.

And here’s a quick appetizer recipe: Ricotta Pea Crostini.

I like my drinks cold. They should have ice chards when poured. So, when you think you’ve shaken enough, shake a little longer – about 30 seconds. Oh, a frosty martini glass is my favorite way to sip. Store it in the freezer or fridge for 30 minutes or so.

This recipe makes 2 drinks because they are best shared with your BFF!
